If this sounds familiar, you're not alone. It's the complaint I hear most often from worried dog owners and I've been hearing it for 23 years.
You know the frustration: You put down your dog's food, expecting the usual enthusiasm, but instead they sniff it, take a few bites, and walk away. The bowl sits there, mocking you, while you wonder what's wrong.
Maybe you've tried switching brands, adding treats on top, even hand feeding them. Sometimes it works for a day or two. Then they're back to being picky again.
Last Tuesday, Jennifer, a beloved friend and parent o Buddy called my clinic in tears:
"Dr. Sarah, Buddy used to finish his entire bowl in 30 seconds. Now I'm lucky if he eats half of it. I've tried everything. Different foods, different bowls, feeding him separately from our other dog. Nothing works. I feel scared and helpless."
What Jennifer didn't realize and what most dog owners don't realize is that Buddy's picky eating wasn't about being spoiled or stubborn.
His gut was trying to tell her something important.
